Premier League clubs to discuss racism, VAR and Richard Scudamore's successor in shareholders' meeting

Premier League clubs will meet today to discuss a variety of issues including renewed attempts to tackle racism, the implementation of video assistant referees (VAR) and the identity of Richard Scudamore’s successor as chief executive.

The first shareholders’ meeting of 2019 is timely, coming in the wake of sports minister Mims Davies calling for an “urgent” gathering of football leaders to combat discrimination in the sport.

Premier League director of policy Bill Bush will outline a series of proposals to be voted on by all 20 clubs and then put forward to the government to draw up a football-wide plan of action.

The Premier League urged fans in December to be “positive and respectful” following a spate of unsavoury allegations and now a more coherent plan of action will be formulated, including working closer with British Transport Police in identifying troublemakers.

Elsewhere, the details of using VAR will be thrashed out, including how the process will be explained in real time to supporters inside the stadium.

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck is also leading the search for Scudamore’s replacement after Susanna Dinnage backed out of accepting the role.
