Premier League clubs 'to campaign to allow fans to drink in seats' on return to grounds

Premier League clubs are reportedly set to campaign for supporters to be allowed to drink in their seats when they return to stadiums.

A law has been in place for 25 years that prohibits fans from consuming alcohol within sight of the pitch.

The law also only allows for drink to be served 15 minutes either side of the game and at half-time.

As reported by The Times, a number of top-flight clubs have now been holding discussions over the prospect of abolishing the law, as they feel fans are more likely to binge drink under the current system.

A chairman at one Premier League club said: "The ban actually encourages binge drinking, because you have fans trying to down three or four pints in an hour or less.

"A law change could promote more responsible drinking and behaviour."

The law has stood since 1985, but any suggestion of it being removed previously has been rejected by the Government due to concerns over public order.

Several Football League clubs have reportedly backed a pilot scheme, including Sunderland, Ipswich and Tranmere Rovers.

Drinking in seats at stadiums is permitted in other sports, such as rugby and cricket, though the law in football was initially introduced as a response to try and curb increasing levels of hooliganism in the 1980s.

A statement from a Home Office spokesman in 2018 said: "This is an important piece of public order legislation, which specifically applies to designated football matches because of football’s unique public order risks."

UEFA recently showed some leniency to their rules on drinking by allowing alcohol to be sold in stadiums again in the Europa League and Champions League from the start of the 2018/19 season.

The previous law banned any drinking inside stadiums completely.

But fans of British teams are still only able to drink in their seats in those competitions when attending away venues across Europe, where consuming alcohol in the stands is allowed.
