Premier League clubs have once again rejected the opportunity to make five subs this season in a move that affects Leeds United.
Last week it was revealed that the top clubs in the Premier League had floated the idea of allowing five subs to be made this season in an effort to combat fixture congestion.
After voting to allow it after the coronavirus pandemic last season, Premier League clubs opted to scrap the rule for the upcoming season.
At a vote in July, the idea of having five subs in 2020/21 was voted down 13-7 by clubs, with many arguing it benefited wealthier sides with deeper squads.
Yet the idea was put on the table again this week ahead of the new season with some clubs hoping that others who had initially voted against the plan had undergone a change of heart.
The Times’ Martyn Ziegler, however, has said that the idea was once again voted down at a meeting on Thursday.
It means that managers will be limited to making three substitutions a game for the upcoming campaign.
The International Football Association Board had given leagues the choice to extend the five subs rule for another season, with some countries, such as the Scottish Premier League opting to keep it, but the Premier League have reportedly once again opting against keeping the idea.
Critics of the five subs rule argue that it gives too much of an advantage to clubs with big squads that have the ability to pack their bench with talent who can influence matches late on.
Yet others argued it lessened the risk of injury, with more players allowed to be replaced and rested during a busy fixture schedule.
