Premier League clubs pushing for 'festive firebreaker' amid escalating Covid situation

Premier League clubs are believed to be pushing for a circuit breaker over the festive period to try and combat the Covid-19 outbreak in squads.

The Manchester Evening News understands clubs are 'touting the prospect of shutting down matches until the FA Cup third round, which starts on January 7'.

The Premier League itself would not resume until the following weekend of January 15 - missing three rounds of fixtures leaving clubs with.

Newcastle's game against Manchester City is one of five games set to go ahead at the time of writing, but there are growing concerns that more festive fixtures could be postponed.

The Times is also claiming that the Premier League shareholders will meet on Monday to discuss a potential 'festive firebreaker'.

The Premier League has not released any data on vaccine uptake by players since October when it stated 68 per cent of players were vaccinated.

In the same month, it emerged 98 per cent of players and staff in Serie A were vaccinated and 94 per cent in the Bundesliga. In La Liga, 93 per cent of players and staff are fully vaccinated.

Five Premier League matches this weekend have already been postponed but Aston Villa v Burnley, Leeds v Arsenal, Wolves v Chelsea and Tottenham v Liverpool are scheduled to go ahead, as things stand.

Speaking earlier this week, Brentford boss Thomas Frank called for this weekend's round of fixtures to be postponed.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Frank said: "The Covid cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs.

"Everyone is dealing with it and everyone has a problem at this moment in time.

"To postpone this round [of Premier League games] and the Carabao Cup would give everyone a week at least to clean and do everything at the training ground so everything is fine and we break the chain at every club.

"We respect fully that we want to play. We want to carry on but this way we can have Boxing Day going no problem, 100% sure of that," said Frank.

"We think that would be very sensible to do that [postpone games].

"The club have been in regular contact with the Premier League over the last couple of days."

Brighton boss, Potter, has also questioned how long "football can continue on the path it's on."
