Premier League clubs 'push for extension to summer transfer window' until October

Premier League clubs are said to have discussed the possibility of this summer's transfer window being open from August-October rather than the more traditional May-August during the meeting between officials earlier this week.

England's elite division will return to action on June 17, with the league's remaining 92 fixtures set to take place between then until the end of July.

As a result, transfers are likely to be put on the back burner, and according to The Telegraph a number of clubs put forward the idea of a later window than usual.

With Premier League chiefs said to be keen to start the 2020-21 campaign by September 12-13, it could mean teams have at least a month without football to focus on transfer business.

Other top European leagues, such as Spain's La Liga and Germany's Bundesliga, are also likely to follow suit, but Fifa want to limit the time for trading to 16 weeks at the most.

Speaking to Sky Sports recently, Premier League chairman Richard Masters said: "You have a movable feast with lots of different European leagues beginning and ending at different times so there is a judgment call to be made and we will get to that in the next couple of weeks.

"The transfer window will open after the end of the season, it is just a question of how it long it goes on for."

Whenever it takes place, this summer's transfer window is likely to be one of the quietest in memory, with a number of clubs said to have been hit hard financially by the coronavirus crisis.

Nevertheless, the likes of Dortmund's Jadon Sancho and Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli continue to be linked with big-money moves to the Premier League, and some of the biggest clubs could yet continue to splash the cash on strengthening their squads.
