Premier League clubs agree start date for 2020/21 season as Leeds United prepare for return

Premier League clubs have this afternoon agreed on a date to start next season on.

The latest Premier League shareholders meeting took place via video link today and it was agreed that the new season would start on September 12.

With the 2019/20 season finishing more than two months later than planned, the start of the 2020/21 campaign has been pushed back.

Originally scheduled for 8 August, the Premier League is now set to start over a month later than planned and conclude on May 23.

“Premier League Shareholders today agreed to start the 2020/21 Premier League season on 12 September 2020,” a statement from the Premier League read.

“The final match round of the campaign will take place on 23 May 2021.

“The Premier League will continue to consult The FA and EFL regarding the scheduling of all domestic competitions.”

The opening game may also be played on Friday 11th September, depending on the TV schedule, with an individual Friday game tasked with kick-starting the season just like last year.

One of Brentford, Fulham, Cardiff City or Swansea City will join Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion in the top-flight next season.

While two of Bournemouth, Watford and Aston Villa will be joining Norwich City in the Championship next season.
