Premier League club confirm appointment of former Liverpool coach after adding to Everton pain

Bournemouth have appointed former Liverpool coach Gary O'Neil as their new permanent head coach on an initial 18-month contract.

O'Neil has made a positive impression at the club during his spell as interim boss, a responsibility he assumed after the Cherries parted company following a 9-0 defeat by the Reds at Anfield at the end of August.

Guiding Bournemouth to four wins during his 12-game spell in charge of the side, the 39-year-old has proven to be a popular figure on the south coast. Initially joining the club last year as a member of the coaching staff, he was present as Premier League promotion was secured.

O'Neil's first coaching role arrived within Liverpool's Academy, however, having spent six months serving as an assistant to under-21s manager Barry Lewtas between August 2020 and February 2021.

Explaining why Bournemouth have taken the decision to stick with the ex-Reds employee, the Cherries' chief executive Neill Blake told afcb.co.uk : "Gary did an excellent job on an interim basis and the board are delighted to make his position as head coach permanent. We have been impressed with the way he has conducted himself from the moment he joined the club and feel he has earned this opportunity to continue to take the team and the club forward."

Before the international break, the Cherries notched back-to-back victories over Everton, triumphing 4-1 and 3-0 in the League Cup and Premier League respectively.
