Premier League chief Richard Masters could face more questions over collapsed Newcastle takeover

Premier League supremo Richard Masters could face fresh questions about the collapse of Newcastle United’s takeover tomorrow.

Masters has been summoned to face MPs on a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee to face questions on the future of football amid the pandemic.

A statement read: “On Tuesday we’ll question FA chair Greg Clarke EFL chair Rick Parry and Premier League chief exec Richard Masters on the sustainability of football for our inquiry into Sport in our communities.“

Tuesday’s session does not specifically aim to cover United’s collapsed takeover bid - but this doesn’t stop interested Committee Members from raising it.

Masters will face the MPs from 9.30am.

One of the MPs on the panel, Julie Elliott, has clashed with Masters before and criticised him for the lack of communication when Amanda Staveley, the Public Investment Fund and the Reuben brothers were left waiting for answers in the summer.

However, other MPs on the panel include Giles Watling and John Nicholson who have both made it clear they were against the prospect of a Saudi Arabia-led takeover.

In response to Elliott’s questions on communication earlier this year, Masters said: “Some takeovers are straightforward and others aren’t. But if they can find the right people for their football clubs, they will be allowed through, and if not the right people, they won’t.”

However, the takeover has since collapsed with the Middle East group withdrawing when the Premier League failed to give a yes or a no and a row over whose name would be above the door at St James’ Park finally curtailing the painful saga.
