Premier League chief makes Rooney Rule "agenda" declaration

The Premier League has no plans to introduce a Rooney Rule in an effort to increase the number of BAME coaches according to its chief executive Richard Masters.

The lack of diversity of senior figures within football has been highlighted recently.

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, who has been a leader in the fight against racism, spoke on BBC's Newsnight about the lack of role models in positions of power.

The Rooney Rule, which sees at least one BAME candidate interviewed for each senior coaching role, is enforced within the NFL and is now being used by the FA and the EFL.

But Masters admitted introducing such a rule is not on the agenda despite it being discussed in the past.

He said: “So far we haven’t discussed it. It hasn’t been a topic of discussion and we have no plans to put it back on the agenda.

“I think there are discussions to be had but no current plans to put that back on the agenda."

Black Lives Matter protests have been rife around the world and look to highlight the steps that still need to be taken.

Premier League clubs will replace player names with the words "Black Lives Matter" on the back of shirts when they return this week.

But beyond that Masters has claimed they will not be dictating to the Premier League how it should run its business.

Instead he hoped greater participation at lower levels would eventually bear their fruits at the top of the game.

“We clearly need more BAME coaches and more black coaches entering the scheme at the bottom which will create a greater pool and a greater opportunity at the higher levels of the pyramid,” Masters added.
