Premier League chief executive Richard Masters welcomes Chelsea spending after Jurgen Klopp criticism

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has welcomed Chelsea’s spending spree, after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had a dig at their £200million-plus transfer splurge.

Klopp has said the champions are a “different club” to some of their rivals, as they are “not owned by countries or oligarchs”, and warned it will take more than heavy investment to wrestle the title from their grasp.

Chelsea are ready to take their summer spending to around £250m by signing Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, having already brought in Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz.

Klopp said last on Wednesday: “We are a different kind of club. We won the Champions League last year and won the Premier League by being the club we are.”

Asked how comfortable he is that multi-million pound transfers are taking place while EFL clubs are struggling financially, Masters said: “Part and parcel of running Premier League clubs is to put the best side on the pitch.

“Some clubs are in a period of transition at the moment, others aren’t and, obviously, you can see some of the figures out there, everyone can see the cost of those purchases over the period of contract, and clubs are having to make difficult decisions. We welcome new faces to the Premier League as they add interest to the competition.”

Chelsea are in talks with Rennes over Mendy and believe they are close to securing him on a five-year deal.
