Premier League champions Liverpool are three wins away from breaking Sunderland's 128-year record

Liverpool are just three wins away from breaking an English top-flight record held by Sunderland for 128 years.

On Thursday evening Jurgen Klopp's side were confirmed as Premier League champions after Chelsea beat Manchester City, and that means that Sunderland academy graduate Jordan Henderson will be the first Liverpool captain for 30 years to lift a league trophy.

But Henderson can also help the Reds break a long-held record of his boyhood club that dates back to the 1891-92 season.

That season Sunderland - known as the Team of All Talents - won the first of their six top-flight league titles. And in doing so they won every home game that season - 13 in total.

How Sunderland’s position in the football pyramid has changed

In 128 years since no team has done that in the top flight, with Brentford in Division 3 North the last team to go a full season in England while winning every game on home turf back in 1929/30.

Liverpool have so far won all 15 of their games at Anfield this season - thus surpassing Sunderland's 13 wins at their Newcastle Road ground.

But Klopp's side still have to win three more home games if they're to break Sunderland's record by winning every home league game in a campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley and top four-chasing Chelsea are the three sides that stand in the way of Liverpool capping off an incredible season with the impressive record.
