Premier League CEO sends warning over live TV coverage

Richard Masters has refused to make commitments over all Premier League football being shown on TV from October onwards.

A last-minute change of heart means that every Premier League game will be televised in September due to matches being played behind closed doors.

That was after it initially looked like only a standard number of games would be broadcast live - meaning both Newcastle United and Burnley supporters had no way of legally watching their team live in September.

Yet the agreement to show every game is currently only in place for September, with the Premier League promising to make further decisions going forward.

It is currently unclear whether fans will be able to attend Premier League matches in October as originally planned due to the Government introducing new coronavirus restrictions.

Even if supporters are allowed in, large swathes of fans will still be unable to get to games due to limited capacities.

Yet Premier League CEO Masters is making no promises over the broadcasting of matches at this stage.

He told BT Sport: “In September fans won’t be in stadiums so we’ll make those matches available via our normal broadcast partners.

"We’re happy to do that."

He added: “We don’t want to make open-ended commitments on televised football.

“We need to take our time to get decisions right.

“The situation is going to change and is going to be fluid, so in making the commitments we have in September, it gives us the time to work out what the right next step is.”
