Premier League boss drops bombshell affecting Nottingham Forest and Leeds United

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has suggested that relegation from the top flight could still be scrapped this season.

The 2019-20 campaign has been suspended for more than two months now due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Premier League has remained committed to completing their remaining fixtures, with further talks planned for next week on how and when to resume proceedings.

Nottingham Forest will be keeping a close eye on what happens as they look to maintain their Championship promotion challenge.

The Reds are fifth in the table - in the play-off zone - with nine games remaining.

Leeds United are top, with West Bromwich Albion currently in the second automatic promotion spot.

EFL chairman Rick Parry has already claimed that things could get "messy" if teams are denied from promotion from the second tier, with the 71 clubs outside of the Premier League set to vote on resolutions to the season.

Meanwhile, FA boss Greg Clarke has said that relegations will definitely take place, despite concerns from a number of teams involved in the battle at the bottom of the table.

But Masters, speaking to the BBC, has suggested that there is still a chance relegations will be cancelled, with it set to be discussed with the 20 clubs next week.

“That is a significant topic. And we haven’t actually discussed it with our clubs," he said.

On relegation being cancelled, he added: “It will come up for discussion, that will be part of the debate we are going to have.

"You have to have contingency plans. Curtailment is still a possibility and so what would happen in that environment, is something we are yet to discuss with our clubs.”

Forest are set to return to training next week following a statement from the EFL. Players and staff will have to be tested for coronavirus before they can do so.
