Premier League 'asks for the national anthem to be played' ahead of Everton and Liverpool games

The Premier League have reportedly asked all clubs to play the national anthem before all games kick off next weekend ahead of King Charles III's Coronation.

According to a report by the Mail, top-flight clubs with a home match next weekend have been contacted to 'strongly suggest' that God Save the King should be played before their games take place. The report also claims that clubs will be provided with an official portrait of the King and The Queen Consort and the Coronation Logo to be displayed on big screens while the anthem is sounded.

Liverpool play Brentford next Saturday live on Sky Sports, while Everton are away to Brighton at the Amex on Monday evening. That game will be shown live on BT Sport.

Sections of the Anfield club’s support have previously booed the national anthem. Liverpool supporters noticeably booed the national anthem ahead of the 2022 FA Cup Final at Wembley and before July’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City at Leicester’s King Power Stadium Prince William was jeered as he shook the hands of players.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a minute’s silence was respectfully observed before kick-off ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League game against Ajax. While a period of silence and the playing of the national anthem took place ahead of Everton's match with West Ham United back in September.
