Premier League announces Goal of the Season winner - and Man City fans won't like it

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has won the Premier League’s Goal of the Season award after his stunning strike against Manchester City.

The England international’s sensational effort topped a list of every Goal of the Month winner in the Premier League this season, which also included Vincent Kompany’s match winner against Leicester City.

Townsend, who saw his effort in December win Goal of the Month, admitted he had not realised how good a goal it was until he saw replays.

"We got a free-kick and the ball's dropped out of the air. I just thought, 'Yeah, it's sat up perfectly, I'm going to hit this.',” he told the Premier League’s official website.

"I didn't really know how good a goal it was. Everyone was saying, 'It was incredible, it was the best goal I've ever seen.'

"I just thought it was a volley from outside the box and it's not until I watched it back, then I thought, 'Oh wow, maybe that is a bit special.' "

The effort is the third to win Carling’s Goal of the Season award, following Emre Can's strike for Liverpool against Watford in 2016/17 and Sofiane Boufal's goal for Southampton against West Brom last season.
