Premier League and UK Government in 'talks' about June return behind closed doors

Premier League chiefs are currently locked in talks with the UK Government about a June return for top-flight action.

Football across the continent is currently suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, with no side in the Premier League or EFL kicking a ball since March 13.

But all 20 Premier League clubs are now believed to have an agreement in place that will see top-flight action return by the beginning of June - something Leeds United and the rest of the EFL will be paying close attention to.

The report, in the Daily Mirror, also claims that the remainder of the season will be carried out behind closed doors.

A meeting took place on Friday between England’s football governing bodies, and the idea is believed to have been discussed at length and an embryonic plan is now being put in place to enable clubs to return to action.

However, it is worth noting that the plan will only be implemented if it is deemed safe to do so, and measures will be put in place to ensure that the environment that the players and essential match-day staff return to is as sterile and clean as possible.

And although rights holders Sky Sports and BT Sport don’t have the capacity to broadcast every Premier League game between now and the end of the season, showing some matches on free-to-air channels is also being looked at according to the report.
