The nation could be set for a bonanza of live football if the Premier League and Championship are given the green light to restart next month, with talks ongoing to broadcast as many of the remaining matches as possible.
With football targeting a return in mid-June and almost 200 fixtures still to play in the top two tiers, there could be as many as four live matches per day until the end of July.
Premier League clubs have been told that should the season resume under Project Restart, kick-off times will be staggered, with as many of the 92 matches as possible given a TV slot.
Sky Sports and BT Sport already have agreements in place to broadcast 47 of the remaining top-flight fixtures and talks are continuing about airing the outstanding 45 free-to-air, including on the Premier League’s YouTube channel. Amazon could also be given another raft of fixtures.
There are 108 Championship matches left to play and EFL chiefs are keen to follow the Premier League’s lead by showing all remaining matches live, with some likely to be streamed on club channels.
The Premier League’s plans to return depend on the Government’s update on Sunday, while they must also convince players it is safe to return.
Crystal Palace doctor Zaf Iqbal, who is head of the Premier League Doctors’ Group, has dismissed suggestions that all 20 top-flight doctors are concerned about details of Project Restart. “These are not the views of the 20 doctors,” he said.
