The importance of Leeds United’s return to the Premier League should not be underestimated.
That’s the view of former Leeds striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who said the top flight will be a better competition for having the Whites in it.
Marcelo Bielsa ended Leeds’ 16-year wait for Premier League football as he guided them to the Championship title last season.
They got their campaign underway on Saturday evening as they made the trip to reigning champions Liverpool in their curtain raiser.
It is those kind of games Leeds fans have been craving for the last 16 years, but will now be happening on a weekly basis now they are back in the ‘big time’.
Hasselbaink, who starred for Leeds in the top flight between 1997 and 1999, said their promotion is the Premier League’s gain.
“It’s so important (to have Leeds back),” he told Sky Sports.
“So important for the club, for the city, for the supporters but also for the Premier League.
“The Premier League is going to be a better competition with Leeds in it. The atmosphere in that stadium, at Elland Road, to be back in the Premier League… I am looking forward to it.”
