A Premier Inn hotel has been destroyed by a fire that has raged for several hours.
Drivers using a motorway around Bristol are being warned about the danger of smoke after the fire at the Premier Inn near Cribbs Causeway.
The enormous blaze has sent plumes of thick black smoke into the air, reducing visibility on the M5. It is especially bad near the Cribbs Causeway shopping centre, on the outskirts of the city.
Firefighters from across Somerset have been battling the fire since Wednesday afternoon and roads have been closed.
Avon and Somerset Police declared it a "major incident" because of the level of resources needed by the emergency services at a time when they were already stretched following the E xtinction Rebellion protests in the city.
The A4018 at Cribbs Causeway is still shut in both directions on Thursday morning.
The hotel has been completely destroyed in the blaze.
Local residents are still being advised on Thursday to keep their windows and doors closed where possible.
Paulton Fire Station has also released a direct warning to M5 drivers on Twitter, with smoke a possible visibility issue for drivers.
The Avon Fire and Rescue service is still advising people to avoid the area.
The fire was first reported at 1.30pm on Wednesday. It is understood to have started on the third floor and spread to the roof. There are no reports of injuries.
