'Premature' to book summer holidays abroad Scots warned as covid spikes in Europe

It's still too soon to risk booking holidays abroad this summer, Scots have been warned.

The Scottish Government and the SNP responded to a UK government minister's suggestion that people can "start to think" about taking foreign trips.

Tory Grant Shapps says it's the first time in months he isn't telling people not to book summer breaks, just days after Downing Street published a document saying the picture remains unclear.

He announced a framework for the resumption of overseas travel, the Daily Record reports, including details of necessary covid testing before outward and return trips.

However, this won't apply in Scotland, where health is devolved to the Scottish Government and non-essential travel is still banned.

Asked if people could start to book foreign holidays now, Shapps said on Friday: "I'm not telling people that they shouldn't book summer holidays now, it's the first time that I've been able to say that for many months."

He said he was looking to "drive down the costs" of tests required for international travel to resume.

But an SNP spokesman said "covid would not be taking a summer holiday".

They explained: "Infection rates remain concerningly high in popular destinations like Spain and France. In fact, much of Europe is in a race between viral spread and vaccination.

"And while Scotland's vaccination programme is on target, we must be vigilant against importing new strains of the virus from abroad and undoing all the progress made by the country's collective sacrifice.

"For these reasons, we consider planning summer holidays at the moment to be premature. The situation in Scotland remains that foreign travel is not allowed unless it is for essential purposes.

"However, we have always favoured a four-nations approach to such matters so we will continue to monitor developments and react accordingly as the situation develops.

"As we have been at pains to reiterate all along, restrictions will not kept in place for a moment longer than necessary."

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: "As we have made clear, the position in Scotland remains that it's not permitted to travel abroad without an essential reason.

"Border health measures are designed to prevent the introduction of new chains of transmission, and they are even more important now to stop the spread of new strains of coronavirus.

"Where possible we will look to adopt a four nation approach for the re-opening of international travel. However, decisions on border health measures are a devolved matter and will be taken by Ministers on the basis of evidence and with the safety of our communities as our primary concern."
