Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda on Thursday congratulated Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on his return to government.
Dr Mahathir, 92, visited Gen Prem, 98, at his Si Sao Thewes residence. He is on the second of a two-day official visit to Thailand, his first since he won the election in May.
It was their first meeting in more than three decades but Gen Prem's close aide, Pissanu Phutthawong, said the two "old friends" have kept in touch
Gen Prem came out to greet the visiting prime minister and led him inside for a 15-minute meeting.
Gen Pissanu said the Privy Council president praised Dr Mahathir for his victory at the polls, saying it reflected the wishes of Malaysians.
Dr Mahathir stunned then-prime minister Rajib Razak by leading his Pakatan Harapan grouping to a win in the election that unseated the National Front coalition, or Barisan Nasional in Malay, which had been in power for 61 years, since Malaysia gained independence from Britain.
He met Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at Government House on Wednesday with a pledge to support Thailand in tackling the southern insurgency.
The Malaysian prime minister was due to wrap up his visit to Thailand by delivering a keynote speech outlining relations between the two countries at Chulalongkorn University on Thursday afternoon.
