
Visitors take in early-blooming ume blossoms during peak viewing season at Yushima Tenjin shrine in Tokyo, where the ume matsuri festival is being held. The shrine grounds are home to about 300 trees of about 20 different ume varieties, with many trees aged 70 to 80 years old. About 80 percent are shiraume that produce white blossoms. The Yomiuri Shimbun is a sponsor of the festival, which runs through March 8.
