A preparatory office will be established by the end of the month to start setting up the new agency that will unify the digitization of administrative services, Digital Transformation Minister Takuya Hirai has announced.
Hirai told reporters in Tokyo on Saturday that the office would be created within the cabinet secretariat. It will comprise 40 to 50 officials from the ministries and agencies involved, and will work on building a system for the digital agency, which is scheduled to be established next year.
The office will also formulate related bills to be submitted to next year's ordinary session of the Diet. To help flesh out the new organization, Hirai said he will solicit proposals for the agency from the private sector and the public, which he hopes will be reflected in the agency's establishment.
Hirai spoke to reporters after a study session with cabinet secretariat officials that lasted about four hours. He said that it gave him a sense of the schedule and specific ideas.
The digital agency is one of the key policies of the Suga administration. After a series of preliminary meetings, a ministerial meeting on digital reform is scheduled for Wednesday, to be attended by all Cabinet ministers.
