ATLANTA _ A preliminary hearing will be held June 4 for the three suspects accused in the shooting death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery.
Attorneys for Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan filed motions for the hearing, which will be held at the Glynn County courthouse. The purpose of a preliminary hearing is to determine whether or not there is enough evidence to move forward with a case.
"All parties will be present in court with the exception of the defendants. They will be via computer at the Glynn County Detention Center," the Glynn magistrate clerk told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
All three defendants have been charged with murder in the February death of Arbery. The three, all represented by different defense attorneys, are currently being held without bond.
Arbery died in a neighborhood outside Brunswick. Gregory and Travis McMichaels, a father and son, were charged with murder and aggravated assault days after a video of the incident went viral, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation got involved. Last week, Bryan was also arrested and charged in the case.
Kevin Gough, Bryan's attorney, also filed other motions on his behalf, including one seeking to prevent "prejudicial and inflammatory" statements released on behalf of the Arbery family. Gough is also asking for bond to be set for Bryan.
"The District Attorney has expressed a desire to try this case in the courts rather than the court of public opinion, a desire shared by all the parties to this case and their counsel, but the District Attorney has made no overt effort to reign in the malicious, prejudicial and inflammatory statements that continue to be put out by those purporting to speak on behalf of Ahmaud Arbery," the motion states.
Cobb County District Attorney Joyette Holmes has been appointed the prosecutor for the cases.
