Malaria during pregnancy is a serious public health problem, with substantial risks for the mother and foetus. Pregnant women are especially prone to severe attacks of the disease, which can lead to death, abortion, premature labour and still-birth. In sub-Saharan Africa alone, over 30 million women each year become pregnant who are at risk of contracting malaria. In areas of both low and high malaria transmission maternal health can suffer due to the differing levels of immunity throughout endemic regions.
