Pregnant woman, unborn child die in suspected targeted shooting in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA — A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed Saturday night in a shooting in Philadelphia's Crescentville section that police say appears to have been a targeted hit.

The 32-year-old woman, who was seven months pregnant, was unloading baby shower gifts from a Kia Soul when she was shot in the head and stomach around 8:30 p.m. on the 6100 block of Palmetto Street, police said.

She was pronounced dead at Einstein Medical Center at 9:06 p.m., and the child at 9:15 p.m., according to police, who released no other details.

"The person who did this couldn't be more cowardly," Deputy Commissioner Christine Coulter told 6ABC at the scene overnight.

Asked what the city can do about the continuing gun violence, Coulter said, "We can't stop people who are intent on shooting somebody. ... It looks like someone was targeting her."

An investigation continued Sunday with Mayor Jim Kenney announcing the city is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

"This news is deeply upsetting and heartbreaking," Kenney tweeted, who urged anyone with information to contacting police by calling or texting 215-686-8477.
