Pregnant woman submits PhD thesis from hospital before Christmas Day birth

A pregnant woman submitted her university thesis from her hospital bed - and then prematurely gave birth on Christmas Day.

Sarah Humphrey, of Bishopston, welcomed little Theodore into the world at 9.19am today (December 25) in St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol.

But the birth marked Mrs Humphrey’s second cause for celebration in a matter of days.

The proud mum revealed she finished her Bristol University PhD thesis from the maternity ward on Monday (December 23), in what she described as “stressful” conditions.

Around 48 hours later, the psychology student and her husband Simon were delighted to meet little Theodore, a couple of weeks earlier than anticipated.

The youngster, weighing 6lbs 4oz, will no doubt be a tremendous source of excitement for big brother Elijah, aged four.

A total of 11 babies were born in St Michael’s Hospital by 4.30pm today, including the second child of Matthew and Zoe Wilson.

The Cheltenham residents, who had come to Bristol to visit family, spoke to Bristol Live while holding their as-yet-unnamed son.

Mr Wilson, an engineer, explained that the middle name would be Gerard in a tribute to Mr Wilson’s grandfather, who died on a previous Christmas Day.

Mrs Wilson said their first son, three-year-old John, had already been in for a visit following the 10.55am birth.

“He seemed to be taking it in his stride,” said Mrs Wilson, adding with a laugh: “He even offered the baby some orange.”
