Deputies still looking for gunman who shot pregnant woman in the face in Fresno County

Aug. 04--Authorities continued Tuesday to look for a gunman who shot a pregnant woman in the face during a road rage incident in Fresno County.

The 18-year-old woman, who was three months pregnant, was riding in the passenger seat about 10:30 p.m. Sunday as her husband was driving north on South Englehart Avenue in Reedley when the shooting occurred, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Investigators said the husband passed an SUV on the rural, two-lane road because it was driving slowly, but the SUV caught up and pulled alongside on the left. Someone in the passenger seat of the SUV shot at the couple, hitting the woman in her left eye, officials said.

The SUV sped off while the husband frantically turned around and pulled off the side of the road in neighboring Tulare County and asked a passerby to call 911.

The passerby then followed the husband as he raced his wounded wife to a hospital. She remained in critical condtion Tuesday, officials said, and her unborn baby survived.

The gunman and driver were still being sought. Authorities said the attack was "unprovoked," so "it's unclear why someone in the suspect's vehicle resorted to an act of violence."

The vehicle is described as a light brown 2006 to 2012 SUV, possibly a Chevy Tahoe, Suburban or GMC Yukon. It was last seen driving toward East Huntsman Avenue.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fresno County Sheriff's Office at (559) 600-3111.
