Pregnant woman 'knocked down by scrambler bike' in Dublin on Christmas Day

A hardworking crew of the Dublin Fire Brigade was praised after they helped a pregnant lady who was knocked down by a scrambler bike on Christmas Day.

Staff from the Phibsborough station who were on duty attended the incident that happened earlier on Wednesday.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Paul McAuliffe, hailed the crew saying: “Next stop D watch @DubFireBrigade in Phibsborough to meet with officers on duty. As @LordMayorDublin I’m always proud to support all our frontline council staff. The watch had just returned from an incident where a pregnant lady had been knocked down by a scrambler bike.”

Just days before, Mr McAuliffe, had appealed to parents not to buy quad bikes or scramblers this Christmas, Dublin Live reports.

He also called on communities across the capital to reject the illegal use of scrambler bikes and quads.

A total of 50 people have been killed or injured in collisions involving these vehicles on a public road in the recent years, provisional statistics from the RSA found. Most of these incidents involved children under the age of 18.

Chief Superintendent Paul Cleary of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said: "Members of An Garda Síochána do not want to be delivering devastating news to another family this Christmas so our message is clear; children and young teenagers should not be driving these vehicles in public, or without the necessary licence, insurance, safety equipment and supervision."
