A young mum-of-two has reported that she is ashamed to invite friends round to her home due to the smell.
17-year-old Sophie Smith has claimed that the overpowering smell of damp is throughout her entire council property, and she has to spray air freshener every day in order to try get rid of it.
Sophie has resided in the home since February this year and has welcomed countless workmen through her front door in order to resolve the issue but despite their efforts, they have not yet been able to rectify the problem which originated from the basement.
As well as feeling embarrassed about the issue Sophie, who is pregnant with her third child, has stated that she is concerned about the effect that damp surroundings may have on her seven-month-old son and her other boy who is nearly two.
According to Yorkshire Live, Sophie said: "I have to leave the windows open as much as possible and I keep my clothes in the kitchen otherwise they smell of damp if I keep them downstairs."
She added: "From the first day I walked through the door on February 4 I could smell there was something wrong.
"My friends don't say anything but it is awkward. It would be nice to have a sweet-smelling home I could invite them to.
"Workmen have been round plastering the area in the basement where there's a problem but the problem seems deeper rooted than that."
Sophie's mum Angela Harrison, of Gomersal, added: "Something needs to be done. The kids are forever getting poorly and it does smell here.
"It hits you as soon as you walk through the door. I think she needs to move, it's not good."
Yorkshire Live approached Kirklees Council for comment.
