Pregnant robber who didn't want baby born in jail fails to turn up for sentencing

A pregnant robber who failed to attend her own sentencing is now being hunted by police.

Chantelle Riley, who is over seven months pregnant, was due to be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court today but failed to attend.

At a previous hearing on April 18, Riley begged a judge to delay her sentencing so her baby won't be born in jail after she pleaded guilty to robbery.

Riley and an unknown accomplice left two staff terrified on August 28 last year.

CCTV cameras captured the mum-of-one casing the branch - wearing pink pyjamas - shortly before the 7.45pm incident.

Sentencing had been adjourned to today to allow the expectant mum to make arrangements and for pre-sentence reports.

Kenneth Grant, prosecuting, said: "Judge Flewitt granted bail to Miss Riley, she's over seven months pregnant and the learned judge decided he would grant her bail to essentially get her affairs in order, she hasn't attented.

"Miss Williams (defending) has made attempts to find out why she's not here but her instructing solicitors have not been able to give her any information."

Today's judge, Recorder Richard Archer QC asked whether it was possible Riley could be in custody after suggestions she was arrested over the Easter Weekend, but the prosecution said there was no indication she had been remanded or charged.

A bench warrant has now been issued for Riley's arrest in regards to failing to return from her bail.

The judge said: "I'll issue the warrant as not back for bail, if it transpires there's been a charge and she's in custody or a genuine reason, like a pregnancy matter then I'll listen."
