Pregnant mother dies after motorway smash which left her sons and nephew in hospital

A pregnant mother who was fighting for her life after a motorway crash which left her two young sons and nephew in hospital has died.

Frankie Hough, 38, was travelling on the M66 in Lancashire with her two children Tommy, nine, and Rocky, two, plus her four-year-old nephew Tobias Welby when the crash happened.

Adil Iqbal, 22, of Accrington, who was allegedly behind the wheel of a BMW car, has been charged with three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving

He was in custody and appeared at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court.

Ms Hough and the three children had been rushed to hospital with critical injuries. Police said on Monday she had died.

Friends and relatives of Ms Hough have launched a fundraiser to help her family and said their lives had been ‘truly turned upside down’.

Debbie Wright said she was organising the page for her best friend.

She wrote: “Life can be turned upside down in the blink of an eye. These next few weeks/months will be critical for the family and is absolutely traumatising for them all.

“I am humbly knocking on the door of your kind hearts to help and support this family as they go through this difficult time ahead.

“Due to the intense injuries and critical conditions, I’m sure you will be aware that their closest loved ones cannot leave their bed side.

“So I am asking you to find it in your kind hearts to please help my friend’s family by donating what you can.”

The crash took place at 3.10pm on Saturday when two vehicles travelling southbound on the M66 in Bury collided, Greater Manchester Police said.

Sergeant Matt Waggett, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the members of the public who selflessly helped at the scene and called 999, as well as those who assisted when police and emergency services arrived on scene.

‘I urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident to please come forward and share any footage, dashcam or mobile footage, with police. No matter how small you think it is, it could prove vital to our investigation.”
