Pregnant man and multiracial handshakes among new emojis unveiled to increase diversity

A series of new emojis that increase diversity and offer more gender-neutral options have been unveiled ahead of an expected release later in the year.

The collection includes a range of handshakes between different skin tones and gender-inclusive alternatives to existing emojis, including a pregnant man and a person with a crown.

The draft list, published by the Unicode Consortium and illustrated by Emojipedia ahead of World Emoji Day on Saturday, also features a saluting face, biting lip, a melting face, and a low battery emoji.

They are all due to be considered for final approval in September and in part aim to offer masculine, feminine and gender-neutral versions of each emoji.

Emojipedia founder Jeremy Burge said: "Pregnant Man and Pregnant Person are new, and recognise that pregnancy is possible for some transgender men and non-binary people. These are additions to the existing Pregnant Woman emoji.

"Person with Crown is a gender-inclusive alternative to the existing emojis for Princess and Prince.

"Coral is commonly used as an icon to discuss climate change, given the impact of rising global temperatures on coral reefs."

Other additions to the draft list include hands making a love heart shape, a face peeking through its fingers, a spilled glass of water and a bird's nest in tree branches.

In the annoucement, Emojipedia said: "A saluting face, biting lip, coral and a low battery are among the emojis up for approval later in the year. These are currently draft candidates for the next emoji release versioned Emoji 14.0.

"Other inclusions on the draft list are consistent gender options for pregnancy and royalty, 'heart hands', and the ability to choose from 15 different handshake combinations."

People are being encouraged to vote for their favourite from the draft list as part of the World Emoji Awards, which you can take part in here.
