Pregnancy and postnatal exercise classes you can do online from home

Pregnancy and new parenthood is an exciting time for anyone - but the restrictions of lockdown make the prospect more daunting.

Luckily there are plenty of antenatal and postnatal classes and courses available online to support new mums during what may feel like an isolating time.

Sport England and ukactive have launched a new website full of free or low cost online exercise classes to help you stay active and healthy at home.

This Mum Moves features all kinds of workouts to see people of varying fitness levels through each trimester and beyond.

The directory includes simple circuit training classes led by Olympic athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill, as well as yoga and pilates videos and pre- and post-natal cardio and strength workouts from experienced instructors.

ukactive has developed the new website following research that found lockdown was limiting physical activity in some adults in England - and in particular women.

The industry association, which promotes health and fitness, has categorised each workout by its intensity - low, moderate or vigorous - and whether it is suitable for those new to exercising or already active.

Guidance from the UK Chief Medical Officers advises pregnant women to aim for 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week.

Pregnant women who are new to exercise are advised to start gradually, while those who are already active can keep going but listen to their bodies and adapt their workouts where necessary.

For postnatal women, depending on birth experience and the outcome of their six to eight week postnatal check, the advice is to resume or start activity gradually and build up intensity slowly over a minimum period of three months.

For more advice on exercising safely during and after pregnancy, visit the NHS website or talk to your GP if you have any specific health concerns about what is safe for you.
