Predicted final Championship table shows Leeds United are still irresistible despite poor run

Although Leeds United currently sit in fifth, the lowest position the club has been under current head coach Marcelo Bielsa, FiveThirtyEight's super computer has seen enough to predict the West Yorkshire club will be at the top of the table when it matters.

Despite the loss at Millwall, which saw United drop out of the automatic promotion spots and into the play-off places, the super computer is predicting Leeds will finish in first position with 85 points at the end of the season, one point ahead of Fulham who they have placed in second.

The statistical modelling has worked out there is a 58 per cent chance of the Whites getting promoted at the end of the 2019/20 season, 29 per cent chance of them winning the league, 35 per cent chance of finishing in the play offs and less than 1 per cent chance of relegation to League One.

FiveThirtyEight's forecasts use their SPI rating, which is their best estimate of a team's overall strength.

Each team is given an offensive rating based on how many goals it would score against an average team and a defensive rating representing the amount of goals it would expect to concede.

These ratings produce an overall SPI which represents the percentage of available points (thre for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss) the team would take if that average match was played over and over again.

The ratings for any two team can be used to predict the result of a match between them in a variety of formats such as a league game, a home-and-away tie such as the play-off semi-finals or a cup final - or simulate the whole season to calculate the probability each team will win the league or be relegated.

United have been given the second strongest offensive rating in the league (1.7 goals scored) and the joint-strongest defensive rating (0.9 goals conceded). They have been placed 73rd in the global club soccer rankings, ahead of Premier League teams including Watford and Sheffield United.

It's not time to order the open top bus just yet however, this time last season a super computer predicted Leeds United would finish in second position in the league, qualifying for automatic promotion.

Some other notable finishes include:

West Bromwich Albion 3rd

Nottingham Forest 4th

Bristol City 5th

Swansea City 6th

Huddersfield Town 16th

Reading 22nd

Luton Town 23rd

Barnsley 24th
