'Precious cargo' affects our driving behaviour

MILLIONS of UK motorists drive more cautiously when transporting a pet, new gaming console or carry-out than with friends and family as passengers, according to a study.

The research by vehicle leasing outfit Vanarama found a sizeable 32 per cent of motorists would drive most safely with their pets on board.

That compared with 27 per cent each for partners and parents, while friends (eight per cent) and parents-in-law (six per cent) better hang on tightly.

Meanwhile, a huge 34 per cent of young men aged 18 to 34 said they’d be more likely to obey the rules of the road to get their new Xbox Series X or PS5 home above any loved-ones.

What’s more, 21 per cent of all those quizzed admitted they would take the most care driving to get their takeaways home intact instead of prioritising relatives and pals.

Some even admitted to turning on the heated seats to keep their food warm, while others confessed to taking corners at 5mph to avoid spillages. You can find out more about the Vanarama survey here.

A spokeswoman for the company said: “It’s important that motorists drive as safely as possible at all times.”
