'Praying we can join them' - Nottingham Forest fans congratulate Leeds United on promotion

Leeds United have been promoted back to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites’ return to the top flight was confirmed on Friday night, when their closest challengers, West Brom, were beaten 2-1 at Leeds’ near neighbours Huddersfield to leave them just a point ahead of Brentford.

That Albion result, coupled with Leeds’ narrow 1-0 success of Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at Elland Road, means they now cannot be caught and will travel to Derby on Sunday knowing a win at Pride Park would secure the title.

In a big show of respect, Nottingham Forest fans offered their congratulations to Leeds fans, with the hope that it will be they who join their old rivals back in the top flight via the play-offs early next month.

While Forest cannot now challenge for automatic promotion with United, Sabri Lamouchi’s Reds still have the carrot of the play-offs to go for.

With two games of the regular season remaining, Forest need just one point to confirm their place inside the top six from their remaining two games.

Their place could be confirmed on Saturday, 24 hours before they face Barnsley at Oakwell, should Millwall lose at QPR.
