Prayers for Kheri victims, SKM says stir to continue

BHATINDA: The farmers from not only Punjab and Haryana but also Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh gathered at Tikunia in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on Tuesday to pay tributes to the four farmers and a journalist where a BJP car had crushed them on October 3.

The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) said: “The killings will not break our spirit, and the agitation will continue. The country has watched the BJP’s desperate attempt to crush a powerful democratic movement but we will not allow the movement to be derailed.” From the prayer pandal at Tikunia for farmers Nachhattar Singh, Lovepreet Singh, Gurvinder Singh, and Daljeet Singh, and journalist Raman Kashyap, the SKM said: “It’s a shame that Ajay Mishra continues as a minister in the Narendra Modi cabinet despite solid grounds for his arrest and sacking. Shaheed Kalash Yatras will carry the urns of the victims’ ashes to all districts of UP and other states. As planned, we’ll burn the BJP leaders’ effigies on Dussehra and stop the trains three days later on October 18.”

Similar prayer meetings and candlelight vigils on morcha’s ‘Shaheed Kisan Diwas’ were held across the country for the five Lakhimpur Kheri victims apart from 631 other farmers who have died during a year of the agitation.

The five soldiers (Jaswinder Singh, Saraj Singh, Gajjan Singh, Mandeep Singh, and Vaisakh H K) who sacrificed their lives in Jammu and Kashmir were also remembered. Four months ago, the wedding procession of sepoy Gajjan Singh had carried the farmer union flag.

Farmer unionists from different states and various UP districts received the urns they’ll carry back to mobilise more participants for the struggle.
