MINAMI-SANRIKU, Miyagi -- Many people have visited a partially completed reconstruction memorial park since it opened in December to pay tribute to victims of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake in Minami-Sanriku, Miyagi Prefecture. The park is still under construction, with the aim of being completed this autumn.

Climbing the stairs leading from the parking lot, visitors reach the top of what is called a "prayer hill." Against the backdrop of Shizugawa Bay, a monument lists of the names of 804 people who died or went missing in the earthquake and following tsunami.

Nearby is the ruined structure of a former town government office building for disaster prevention and the Minami-Sanriku Sansan Shopping Street, where the Tokyo Olympic torch relay will arrive on June 20.
