Thamanat Prompow -- the former deputy agriculture minister sacked from his cabinet seat last Thursday -- will remain the secretary-general of the ruling Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), with Gen Prawit Wongsuwon staying on as party leader.
Deputy Prime Minister Prawit, acting in his capacity as PPRP leader, told a party meeting at Parliament on Wednesday that the party would not be reorganised for the time being and he would remain as party leader, according to PPRP list MP and chief government whip Wirach Ratanasate.
Gen Prawit told PPRP members to meet and help people in their constituencies for the remainder of the government's tenure, Mr Wirach said.
"From now on there will be no factions in the PPRP. There will be only the single faction of Gen Prawit -- the faction of the party leader," Mr Wirach declared.
He also said that Mr Thamanat promised to remain as the PPRP secretary-general and continue helping the party.
All key figures of the PPRP attended the meeting at the parliament on Wednesday.
Mr Thamanat was recently accused of plotting to topple Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha from the prime minister's seat by persuading some PPRP MPs, together with some representatives of small political parties, to vote against the prime minister in the recent no-confidence debate.
Last Thursday the Royal Gazette announced Mr Thamanat's removal from the cabinet, saying the prime minister proposed it for the sake of government work.
