Prashant Kishor resigns as principal advisor to Punjab CM Amarinder Singh

CHANDIGARH: Poll strategist Prashant Kishor has resigned as principal advisor to Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh ahead of assembly elections due in the state in early 2022.

Kishor had successfully scripted Congress’ campaign for the last 2017 elections, which revolved around 'Punjab Da Captain' slogan and Amarinder was keen for a repeat performance this time.

In his letter to the chief minister, Kishor said, "Dear Sir, As you are aware, in view of my decision to take a temporary break from an active role in public life, I have not been able to take over the responsibilities as your principal advisor. Since I am yet to decide on my future course of action, I request you to kindly relieve me of this responsibility. I take this opportunity to thank you for considering me for this position."

Why Prashant Kishor is wooed by every political leader

There has been ambiguity over Kishor’s role during the long-drawn process of elevation of Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu as the new state president.

Earlier in March, Kishor had an interaction with the party’s first time MLAs in Punjab to get their feedback and it was being speculated that he was already working on poll strategies on key issues.

Ahead of the 2022 state assembly elections, Punjab chief minister had on March 1 appointed Kishor as his principal advisor.

Kishor was given the rank and status of a cabinet minister.

He will take a token honorarium of Re 1 as pay, said a notification issued by the department of general administration.
