A campaign launched by The Press in York is close to achieving its aim. MPs have approved new legislation which will give judges the power to place child abductors on the sex offenders' register, and its further passage through parliament looks assured. If so, it will be law by mid-February. York MP Hugh Bayley told a Commons committee of the key role played by the paper (circ. 35,638), saying: "I congratulate The Press on its campaign and for its balanced coverage of an emotional issue."
