Praise for ‘incredible’ Newcastle teachers helping hundreds of families through Covid-19 crisis

Newcastle’s teachers have been hailed for their “incredible commitment” as they continue working through the coronavirus crisis.

The vast majority of the city’s schools are still open to provide vital support for vulnerable youngsters and children of key workers.

In an open letter to schools and childcare providers, Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes thanked staff for their efforts – and pledged to help get them adequate equipment to protect them from the spread of the disease.

Roughly 1,100 pupils in Newcastle were in school on Monday, the first day when most families were told to keep their children at home.

However, that number had dropped to around 600 by Wednesday.

In his letter, Coun Forbes said: “It fills me with immense pride to see our services step forward onto the front line to mitigate the impact of this hidden enemy, colleagues in the NHS, public sector partners and you – Newcastle’s teachers, headteachers and school support staff.

“I appreciate that the overwhelming majority of schools and many childcare providers across the city have remained open this week, providing essential care and education to vulnerable children and those of key workers.

“By showing this incredible commitment you are protecting some of our city’s most vulnerable young people and allowing essential workers to continue in their roles.

“This grit, determination and spirit you are displaying is a true testament to your commitment as educators, your belief in our young people and a reflection of the vibrant communities you support.”

The Government advice for key workers is that they should only send their children to school or childcare if it is not possible to keep them at home.

Any parents unsure about the situation has been told to contact their child’s school or childcare provider in the first instance.

The council has also created a list of available childcare places for children of key workers at newcastlesupportdirectory.org.uk

Coun Forbes added: “I can promise you I am lobbying central Government to ensure you have the protection and support you need to continue delivering education safely and securely, including additional PPE for those schools who do not have adequate access.

“I will also continue to support our council’s education support team so they can continue to provide their services to you and your pupils throughout the crisis.

“I firmly believe we will get through this crisis, our city will protect the most vulnerable people in our communities and that we will once again flourish as the Great North City.

“Once again thank you. Thank you for continuing your work in the face of this escalating crisis. Thank you for protecting our vulnerable children. Thank you for believing in our city’s young people.”
