Praise for heroes who helped a police officer chase down and detain a Marks and Spencer shoplifter

Police have praised two quick-thinking members of the public who leapt into action to help an officer chase down a shoplifter.

The man ran away from Marks and Spencer at Manchester Fort Shopping Park in Cheetham Hill with 'stock' believed to include a bottle of red wine, GMP said.

An officer gave chase, and was quickly joined by two members of the public from Moston.

Police said that together, they helped detain the man ahead of his arrest.

The 'stock' was later recovered and returned to the store.

GMP Manchester North said a 'big thank you' to the two involved, writing on Facebook: "You know who you are."

The man, who hasn't been named, is due to be summonsed to appear in court, GMP said.

Writing on Facebook, the force said: "PC 9979 Smith was out and about this morning when she was alerted to a shoplifter making off from Marks and Spencer at the Fort Retail Park.

"As she chased the male on foot two members of the public from the Moston area helped and as such the male was successfully detained.

"Staff at Marks and Spencer were so happy to get the stock back and the male will be summonsed to appear in court.

"A big thank you to the members of public who assisted, you know who you are."

A picture of a member of M&S staff with a bottle of wine accompanied the post.
