Praise for caring supermarket worker who made sure customer got home safely

Much-loved Lanarkshire supermarket colleague Ann Binks has been praised by her colleagues for coming to the rescue of a stranded elderly customer.

The community champion at Asda in Coatbridge has been commended and even dubbed “Super-Ann” by fellow employees after helping the woman to get home safely after spotting that she was struggling to do so.

Ann noticed that the lady “seemed confused and nervous” just as she was about to finish her shift at the Main Street store.

She said: “I was just about to head home with my husband when I noticed the customer looked distressed, and when I got chatting to her she told me she couldn’t find a way to get home as taxis were unavailable.

“It turned out the lady lived on the same road as us, so I offered to give her a lift to make sure she got home safe.

“Once we got to her house, she was very polite and even invited me in for tea, but I made sure she got in OK and locked her door before I went home. I went back to check on the lady the next day and she was very grateful for the support.”

Ann added: “I’m glad I was there to help, and I felt relieved knowing she was home safe; I would do it for anyone.

“The Asda customers are like my family, and I’ll always go out of my way to make sure they are safe.”

Community champion Ann is well known across the town for her work at the store and with local good causes including supporting foodbanks, the Advertiser’s annual toy appeal, cancer charity fundraisers and Helping Hands soup kitchen – and she was even chosen to represent the local store at Walmart’s 2016 shareholder meeting in recognition of her outstanding contribution.

Customer services manager and store colleague Fiona Steadman thanked Ann by saying: “She has worked at Asda Coatbridge for around 20 years now and is always making sure our colleagues and customers are happy.

“On this occasion, she had already finished for the day but went out of her way to make sure the customer got home safe – this is not surprising as Ann always goes above and beyond for our customers.

“We love having her as part of our team and are grateful for all of her hard work.”
