An exhibition featuring masterpieces from the Prado Museum in Madrid opens Saturday at The National Museum of Western Art in Ueno Park, Tokyo, offering visitors an opportunity to appreciate seven of Spanish artist Diego Velazquez's greatest works.
"Velazquez and the Celebration of Painting: The Golden Age in the Museo del Prado" is being held to mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Spain. The Yomiuri Shimbun is among the organizers of the event.
The Prado Museum, which has more than 7,000 paintings in its permanent collection, is displaying about 70 items at the show -- including paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and Bartolome Murillo in addition to Velazquez -- that reflect the international environment of the art scene around the time of Spain's Golden Age in the 17th century.
"Paintings by Spanish artists are on display along with works by those from regions ruled by the Spanish royal family at that time, such as Flanders and Italy," said Miguel Falomir, director of the Prado Museum, during the opening ceremony on Friday.
"Our museum today owns paintings by various masters -- some of which are shown in this exhibition -- thanks to the fact that members of the royal family were great collectors of art."
The exhibition runs until May 27 and will also be held at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe from June 13 to Oct. 14.
