Powerlifting Scots gran smashes nine records while celebrating her 60th birthday

A Scots gran celebrated her 60th birthday by smashing nine Scottish powerlifting records.

Val Dourley was only beaten by a teenager and a woman in her 40s to come third at the Scottish Powerlifting Open in Edinburgh.

Mum-of-two Val, who has seven grandchildren, lifted a 92.5kg in a deadlift – that’s 14 stone or the weight of a rugby winger.

She said: “I turned 60 in January and in February I competed in the Scottish Open a few weeks later.

“I competed against people of all ages and came third so I was quite chuffed with that.

“I’m pleased with my records but I’m training hard to do more.”

Val, from Livingston, had a bench press of 40kg and a squat of 92.5kg in the under-57kg weight category. At just 4ft 7in tall and only 8 stone 8lbs, Val broke records in the Scottish classic, equipped lifting and overall total records.

She set an unofficial record and the all-time British record squat of 82.5kg for her group.

The dental nurse, who has osteoporosis, took up the sport last June and goes to her local PureGym three times a week for two-hour weights sessions.

Her personal trainer Jonathan Clarkin, 33, has also made his dad 63-year-old Shaun a record-breaker, with 18 Scottish records in two different weight categories.

Shaun, 63, from Livingston, said: “It’s not about winning but beating yourself.”
