Powerlifting gran, 71, spends 20 hours a week training - and she has no plans to quit

A 71-year-old granny who is a powerlifting champion says she has no plans to quit and laughs at people who tell her she's too old.

Mary Duffy began powerlifting when she was 59 in a bid to lose weight.

She lost four stone within a year and now boasts 30 state and world records to her name and spends around 20 hours a week lifting weights and training.

Mary, who has one grandchild, says she looks and feels better than she did 30 years ago and her daily six-hour gym sessions have made her fitter than she's ever been.

As well as lifting weights, Mary also has two personal training sessions and takes part in three fitness boot camps a week.

The super-fit gran says the more she had a "lightbulb moment" when she piled on the pounds after her mum died.

Retired Mary, from Trumbull in Connecticut, US, said: “I’m 71, but I’m the fittest I’ve ever been - I look and feel better now than I did when I was 40."

The super gran holds world records for deadlifting 250lb and can bench 125lb and squat 175lb.

Mary added: “I do get people telling me I’m too old for this, but my motto is ‘you can’t turn back the clock, but you can wind it back up’.

“Sometimes I ask myself ‘why am I doing this?’ but the negative comments are outweighed by the people who tell me I inspire them - and that’s what keeps me going.”

Mary, who has been married to Denis, 76, for more than 40 years, admits it can be hard to build muscle at her age.

But says part of the thrill of powerlifting is seeing her body become more defined.

Sharing updates on her fitness Instagram, @mduff2404, Mary laughs off criticism and when people say she's too old for the gym, tells them to "check out her records".

The champion says she doesn't think she'll ever quite powerlifting unless she absolutely has too and vows to continue working out.

Posting on Instagram, she says: "It's been an awesome journey!!! 60+ body pounds lost, many more pounds lifted. Lots of fun, productive times to come. 11.5 years and still COUNTING!!!!"
