Power's Angus Monfries announces AFL retirement

Port Adelaide player Angus Monfries has announced his retirement from the AFL after 211 games over 13 seasons.

The 30-year-old forward's decision was not unexpected, after struggling to overcome injuries and playing only one senior game this season.

The former Bomber also missed all of 2016 as a result of bans handed to 34 Essendon players over the 2012 doping saga.

"I have had a wonderful opportunity to be a part of two great football clubs," Monfries said in a statement released by the club.

"AFL has been a huge part of my life. While my time playing at the highest level has come to an end, I'm looking forward to making a valuable contribution to the industry in some way."

Monfries, who has studied journalism, was selected by the Bombers with pick 14 in the 2004 AFL draft and made his debut against Melbourne the following season.

He joined the Power at the end of the 2012 season and hit top form in 2013, booting seven goals against Geelong in Round 20.

A fairytale moment came a week earlier, when Monfries kicked a lucky late goal to help his side beat Adelaide in Showdown 35.

The incident would become known as the "Monfries bounce", after the ball kicked wickedly to keep the Power in the game with less than two minutes on the clock.

Monfries would later unintentionally make headlines over a party he hosted in 2016 at his home.

Teammate Jarman Impey pleaded guilty to driving offences, after crashing into parked cars as he left the social gathering.

Port Adelaide's list manager Jason Cripps praised Monfries for his services, and his mentoring of the side's SANFL players.

"Angus had an immediate positive influence on and off the field as soon as he arrived at the club," Cripps said.

"He enjoyed a career-best season in his first year with Port Adelaide and was a major part of our return to finals football in 2013 and 2014, and then showed great strength of character while having to sit out of football for a year in 2016."

Monfries ends his career with a tally of 248 goals.
