SURAT THANI: A power pole planted in one of the lanes of a local road in Ban Na San district was removed after pictures were posted on social media and drew widespread criticism of agencies involved.

Surat Thani governor Witchawut Jinto on Tuesday ordered district chief Banjerd Sareepat and local electricians to remove the power pole from Ban Thung Thong-Nong Khla Road in Ban Na San district and relocate it alongside of the road instead.

It emerged that Thungtao tambon administration organisation (TAO) recently widened the road but did not move the power pole, leaving it jutting out of one of the lanes. Neaerby residents took photos of the power pole and someone posted them on “Theenee Man Surat'' (This is Surat) Facebook page on Monday. The images then went viral.

A local electrician said the TAO had earlier informed his agency that it had improved and expanded the road and asked for the relocation of the power pole. After electricians were too busy to do the work, someone had posted images of the power pole online, he said.

The governor said he immediately ordered the removal of the power pole to prevent possible road accidents after seeing the images on social media.
